Living in a care home can sometimes be a scary prospect. However, there is no need for fear when entering a home for the first time. There are a multitude of care homes in Surrey, Manchester, Portsmouth, London and all over the UK that have luxurious accommodation and professionally-trained staff. So, what can potential care home residents expect when moving in?
The first thing to expect would be independence. While some residents may need help getting dressed or heading to the loo, other aspects of the home should leave the residents a full sense of independence. Privacy and retaining dignity is of utmost importance to the staff. This means the service should offer residents a choice in all aspects of care and in daily living routines where possible.
In issues where a resident cannot perform an action independently, a member of care home staff should always be on hand to help. Preferably, the member of staff should remain the same during the course of a stay in order to let the resident familiarise themselves with the staff and – in turn – let the staff member familiarise themselves with the patient and their particular needs.
It is important for a home to offer a variety of meals when it comes to breakfast, lunch and dinner time. Once again, a degree of independence and flexibility should be employed when it comes to meal time. Residents should have the opportunity to make their own hot drinks and eat their meals at a time that is convenient to them. Residents may not want to eat in the communal area so they should be given the opportunity to eat in their room.
If there is an area of the home a resident is not happy with, the resident should be able to post a complaint in a suggestion box or organise a meeting with the care home manager or owner in order to express their views.
All in all, entering a care home should not be a scary experience. If anything, it should be a pleasant and wonderful journey.
