How can I prepare myself for spray tanning?

One of the most important things you can do before a spray tan is to exfoliate your skin really well to rid yourself of as many dead skin cells as possible. This is because the less dry, dead skin you have, the longer the tan will last because it won’t flake off as fast. Exfoliating your skin well also means that the tan will appear more even in terms of coverage and will therefore look more natural.

How tanned will spray tanning leave me?

This will depend on several factors. One is your skin tone: some people simply respond better to tanning than others and will get significant colour quite quickly, whereas other people’s skin will take a while to build up to a tan. Another thing that affects your tan is the type of spray tan you go for as there are different options available, including different shades. It’s a good idea to start off with one that’s really close to your skin tone so you can build it up gradually, as this will look much more natural than if you jump into the spray tanning deep end – particularly if you have really pale skin.

What do I need to do in terms of aftercare?

You should try not to shower too soon after getting your spray tan done to give the solution time to be adopted by your skin. Some spray tans use a clear solution while others use a bronzer – if you use one with a bronzer in it then you will need to shower sooner than you would with a clear spray tan, if only to avoid staining your clothes and bed sheets.

You should also make sure to moisturise your skin regularly so it stays in good condition and will hold the tan for longer. This will also help to stop the tan from looking patchy.

How long do spray tans last?

This will depend somewhat on your skin, but most spray tans will last anywhere between five and ten days. If you use it on a fairly regular basis then the colour will build up on your skin and will last for longer so you won’t have to have it re-done so often.

Are there any precautions I need to take for the spray tanning process?

If you are really sensitive to chemicals, it might be a good idea to ask your spray tanner what they use in the solution so you can make sure you won’t have a reaction. The vast majority of people won’t have an issue with this, though. Spray tans work just as effectively on people with pale skin as they do on darker skin tones, so this shouldn’t have an impact. You should keep your eyes closed while you are being sprayed just to be on the safe side, but other than that, spray tanning is largely seen as a safe method of gaining a beautiful tan.

Overall, spray tanning is a simple process that produces great results. As long as you use a good product that has a good reputation, you should be bronzed and glowing in no time.
