Are the Acai Berry Benefits Real?

If you follow health and fitness trends, you’ve probably heard of the Acai Berry. It’s a small, round berry found in the rain forests of Brazil, and, if its fans are to be believed, it’s the food that can transform your life. The Acai Berry is rich in anti-oxidants, contains healthy fats, and has health benefits ranging from anti-ageing to weight loss.

Now, those Acai Berry benefits are pretty appealing. Who wouldn’t want to look younger and slimmer? The question is, are those benefits real? Well, the answer to that should be pretty obvious. There’s no magic bullet (or berry), when it comes to health and fitness. That doesn’t mean that the Acai Berry isn’t a great food, or that the Acai Berry benefits in terms of anti-oxidants aren’t genuine, but there’s more to getting fit than drinking a smoothie once a day.

The people that sell Acai Berry based products tend to market those products at customers that are looking for a quick solution. They often promise Acai Berry benefits that are exaggerated, and sometimes rather improbable. For example, they may say that you can lose 20lbs in one week by drinking a shake that contains powdered Acai Berry.

The truth is that the only way to lose weight and feel good is to embark on a sustained program of diet and exercise. That means regulating your Calorie intake, exercising at moderate intensity several times a week, and being patient and consistent with your efforts. Will other methods work? In the short term, possibly, but quick fixes tend not to be sustainable, and eventually you’ll go back to your old habits and likely re-gain all the weight you lost.

Rapid weight loss is not always a myth. Many people who have a lot of weight to lose do notice that they see a huge difference on the scale during the first couple of weeks, and after that results slow down. However, a lot of the weight difference comes from lost water. The modern western diet does encourage water retention, and when you start eating “healthier” and exercising, it’s normal for a lot of that water to get flushed out of your system. Once that’s gone, you’re down to burning fat and muscle. Ideally, you want to lose more fat than you do muscle (or, if you have a sedentary lifestyle, lose fat while gaining muscle). That is a slow process, and you’re likely to see only a movement of 1lb a week, or less in some cases.

One of the Acai Berry benefits is that it tastes great – far nicer than its Calorie count would have you believe. From that perspective, the berry is a great addition to a healthy weight loss regime, and if that’s why you’re considering adding it to your diet then go ahead. Just remember that it’s one part of a good diet, not a single magical solution in its own right. Be patient and consistent, and you’ll love your results.
